Principles of Legislation

  • Empowerment

The legislation should be crafted such that it empowers hunters and hunting organizations to promote hunting. This principle supports the “doing” of the Act outside government legislation and empowers organizations to celebrate hunting as a heritage.

Specifics of Proposed Legislation

  1. Recognition of hunting as an important historical component to Alberta’s cultural heritage. This should include pre-European settlement.

  2. Recognition of hunting as a healthful event physically, mentally and socially. There are numerous specific elements around each of these three points.

  3. Authorize the Minister to establish an event that celebrates hunting (provincial hunting week, provincial hunting day, or youth hunting day, others). Although the declaration of celebration could be by the Minister, hunting organizations should carry out the actual function.

  4. Encourage the hosting of a hunter gathering on an annual basis.

  5. The most important part of legislation would be to empower hunter organizations to carry out celebration and enhancement of hunting.
