The Ontario government is introducing legislation, the Heritage Hunting and Fishing Act (HHFA), to recognize recreational hunting and fishing. The legislation emphasizes that properly regulated hunting and fishing are legitimate and appropriate activities that Ontarians have enjoyed for generations.
The proposal for this legislation was posted on the Environmental Bill of Rights Registry during October for a 30-day comment period. Well over 18,000 responses were received, with 97 per cent expressing support for the proposal.
Future Hunting and Fishing Opportunities
The government wants to help ensure that future generations of Ontarians have continued opportunities to participate in recreational hunting and fishing. The government will continue to regulate hunting and fishing activities as necessary and in accordance with the principles of sound, sustainable resource management.
Recreational hunting and fishing create thousands of jobs across Ontario
Hunting and fishing play an important economic role in many regions of Ontario. These outdoor activities contribute $3.5 billion to the provincial economy annually and support more than 30,000 jobs. Every year, more than 2.4 million people participate in hunting and fishing in Ontario.
New Fish and Wildlife Heritage Commission
The HHFA, if passed, will create the Fish and Wildlife Heritage Commission. The Commission will provide advice to the Minister of Natural Resources on hunting and fishing activities and a variety of fish and wildlife initiatives. It will be an advocate for recreational hunting and fishing by promoting outreach programs for youth, tourism opportunities, and greater participation in fish and wildlife conservation programs. The Lieutenant Governor in Council will appoint members to the Commission.
